This week I took part in the debate in the Lords about an amendment that is being suggested for the counter terrorism and security bill.

It was a long and detailed debate that focused on the old Bill from 2012 that was never instigated by Parliament, the so called “Snoopers charter”.

The political context to this is complicated but I wanted to suggest to my noble friends that it was not an appropriate amendment and to indicate the difficulty of legislating to keep up with technology.

The amendment was withdrawn but it is definitely not the end of the debate.
