I had the pleasure of spending the beginning of last week in Newcastle and Gateshead where I was kicking off Go ON North East. I get the best job – having announced ambitiously that we should get all UK digitally skilled, the team have created a regional approach and pulled together an amazing array of partners which I was then able to swoop in and announce.
We have clear targets based on new bbc reasearch about digital skills. There are 500k people in the NE who cant do four basic things online or who have never been online and we want to help reduce that by 25% over a year – although I would hope for much more than that.
12 councils are working together with 300 partner organisations and hundreds of volunteers to make sure no one is left behind. We were part of three lovely events – one sponsorred by Lloyds focusing on SMEs, a lunch to thank all the councils and my personal favourite, a tea for the digital champions in the Baltic.
Newcastle is a fabulous city with such a great buzz about it, I have no doubt that the spirit of the local partners will mean there is an awesome response to the plan.
